چکیده مقاله:

The present study was conducted to ascertain the ability of Dracaena sanderiana ‘Victory’, a foliage plant species of commercial importance in both domestic and international markets, to thrive under contrasting light environments. The experiment was carried out inside a semi-open greenhouse in Peradeniya, Sri Lanka. Same sized and same aged, ready-to-ship export quality plugs of Dracaena sanderiana ‘Victory’ were grown in plastic pots filled with the standard medium for foliage plants recommended by the Department of Agriculture. Plants were exposed to four different light treatments: full sunlight, 15 % shade under a green net, 50 % and 80 % shade under a black net. Morphological and growth-related parameters were measured, and an aesthetic evaluation was done to verify the overall conformity of plants until 100 days after planting with every 20-day intervals. ‘Victory’ showed variable responses to different light conditions where leaf-related parameters were significantly altered, while the relative growth rate was kept uniform across light environments. Weight ratios that reflect the dry matter partitioning were unchanged. Most of the responses under the black net (50 % shade) were comparable to those under the green net (15 % shade), where the R: FR ratio is reduced. It was found that ‘Victory’ can easily be acclimatized to the light conditions used in the present study. Interestingly, this cultivar scored more than 80 % in the aesthetic evaluation for any given light condition, which indicates the potential of using this cultivar in heterogeneous light environments while keeping the aesthetic appearance unaltered.

This research had conducted to investigate light intensity effects on the lucky bamboo growth in Islamic Azad University, Abhar Branch. The experiment arranged as a complete randomized block design with five treatments (0.75, 1.14, 1.89, 2.29 and 4.09 mmol m-2 s-1) in ten replications. Results showed that 1.89 mmol m-2 s-1 had significant differences than other treatments. The higher level of r...

Pharmacognostic and Antioxidant Properties of Dracaena sanderiana Leaves

Endogenous and exogenous antioxidants are used to neutralise free radicals and protect the body from free radicals by maintaining the redox balance. The antioxidant properties of Dracaena sanderiana leaves were evaluated using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay, and the total phenolic and flavonoid contents were measured. The classes of secondary metabolites were evaluated through p...

Fluorescent protein‐mediated colour polymorphism in reef corals: multicopy genes extend the adaptation/acclimatization potential to variable light environments

The genomic framework that enables corals to adjust to unfavourable conditions is crucial for coral reef survival in a rapidly changing climate. We have explored the striking intraspecific variability in the expression of coral pigments from the green fluorescent protein (GFP) family to elucidate the genomic basis for the plasticity of stress responses among reef corals. We show that multicopy ...

Acclimatization of symbiotic corals to mesophotic light environments through wavelength transformation by fluorescent protein pigments

The depth distribution of reef-building corals exposes their photosynthetic symbionts of the genus Symbiodinium to extreme gradients in the intensity and spectral quality of the ambient light environment. Characterizing the mechanisms used by the coral holobiont to respond to the low intensity and reduced spectral composition of the light environment in deeper reefs (greater than 20 m) is funda...
